| Exhibition Genesis | (Beyond Being Human: Taiwanese Animal Literature) Animals have always been absent from human literary works. Myths, poems, novels, essays, fairy tales… all feature animal totems, depict their lives, express emotions, and even anthropomorphize them. This broad category of animal literature contains the complex relationships between humans and the beings "beyond being human" who share our Earth. Taiwanese literature, with its long history, is certainly not lacking in animal themes. Indigenous cultures speak of spiritual animal essences from mountains and seas, classical Chinese poetry reflects the unique deer hoofprints and bird tracks of the island, novels from the Japanese colonial era portray hardworking oxen and horses, the depths of modernist literary consciousness find human primal instincts in animals, urban literature often features the warm companionship of cats and dogs, and contemporary nature writing turns to reflect on the unchecked expansion of human civilization. Animals do not use words, yet humans have stepped forward to write on their behalf, enriching the diversity of physical and life experiences through "animal literature." A poetic passage from the Book of Job in the Bible states, "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, and the birds of the air, and they will tell you." The beasts and birds represent an unfathomably deep natural world, where humans discover wisdom that transcends humanity itself, thus the necessity to go "beyond being human." - | Design | Inspired by the animals featured in the exhibition, five animals have been chosen and illustrated: the Orca, the Formosan Clouded Leopard, the Formosan Black Bear, dogs, and cats. Regardless of environmental changes or persecution, or their warm companionship, they are always a part of our lives and coexist with us.
