What is "Sometsuke"?
"Sometsuke" is an underglaze decoration technique that uses "blue" dye for painting. "Tsuke" means "decoration," thus "decorating with blue dye."
Commonly found in Chinese blue and white porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is showcased on Japan's particularly pure and light Arita ware. The resulting cobalt blue is exceptionally clean, resembling indigo-dyed fabric, hence the name "Sometsuke."
The "Akai-e" (red painting) technique, which evolved and was refined after 1650, uses a base of vermilion red, adding greater variety and splendor to Arita ware's patterns, enhancing its artistry.
This ceramic technique involves glazing the fired bisque (semi-finished product) and then firing it once at high temperature. Controlling the color variations is extremely challenging, requiring great skill and experience. While this limits the range of suitable colors, the finished patterns are covered with a transparent glaze, giving the ceramic surface a smooth and exceptionally lustrous texture. Combined with Arita ware's characteristic pure white and lightness, the entire piece appears exceptionally clear and bright, resistant to wear, making it ideal for everyday use.
This Akai-e Rimmed Square Plate from Keizangama features a rich, deep vermilion red complemented by crisp, hand-drawn lines. Unlike the stiff, rigid nature of factory-produced items, it possesses the warm, approachable quality unique to handmade crafts, exuding an inimitable charm. Whether paired with Japanese cuisine or everyday Chinese dishes, the clean and elegant Sometsuke porcelain provides a beautiful backdrop that enhances the warmth and aesthetic of home-cooked meals.
Arita ware porcelain has rounded edges and a delicate texture, making it excellent for plating dishes. Even the simplest meal can be effortlessly presented with exquisite care, bringing you the most beautiful dining table and the most comforting life aesthetic.
Suitable for | Main courses like steak, pasta; bread, light brunch, tamagoyaki, salads, desserts... and other dishes.
About Arita Ware
Arita ware originates from Saga Prefecture, the birthplace of Japanese ceramics. In the 1650s, it even became popular in Europe, opening up an international perspective for Japanese ceramics. Its most distinguishing feature is its pure white, lightweight texture, with a hardness and fineness akin to glass, offering unprecedented ceramic performance that amazes. Coupled with its ornate Japanese decorative designs, it was highly favored by European aristocracy at the time.
For 400 years, Arita ware's tradition and innovation have shaped Japan's unique aesthetic consciousness. Since 2016, new endeavors like the SAGAMA project have showcased a greater fusion of modern and traditional craftsmanship.
