The Vienna Kiln (Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten) is Europe's second porcelain kiln (founded in 1717) after Meissener Porzellan. The kiln is located in Schloss Augarten, Vienna. From the perspective of the development of art history, the products of the Vienna kilns can be on the same level as those of Meissen and Nymphenburg, which can be said to be the best porcelain in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and modern Austria. After the kiln was established in 1717, it experienced Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Biddermeier and other styles. In 1864, the kiln was closed due to financial crisis due to the loss of external competition. In 1923, it continued to re-kiln production under the name of Vienna kiln, and cooperated with many artists to produce various kinds of exquisite porcelain.
The consecrated portrait in this porcelain cup is Maria Theresa (Maria Theresa, 1717 / 1780), the Holy Roman Empress of the Booth Dynasty. She came to the throne in 1740 and ruled for 40 years. She also bought the Viennese porcelain kiln from 1744 and changed it to the royal family's direct operation, becoming a famous royal Viennese kiln in history. Since then, the Vienna kiln has a unified base model. It can be seen that the empress understands the brand and has also vigorously supported it, so the blue underglaze shield trademark has become the kiln logo. At the same time, the Queen expanded the kiln factory, recruited many talents from the Meissen kiln factory, enriched product design, and invited sculptors to design porcelain dolls. In order to protect the kilns, a 60% tariff was imposed on imported porcelain from outside the empire, and at the same time higher quality kaolin was imported from Hungary. Since then, the business of the kiln factory has been booming, and the number of employees has increased from the original 10 people to more than 300 people.
The styles of kiln products in this period are mostly rococo and neoclassical. This guest porcelain cup combines Rococo and Neoclassical styles. The handle part is composed of intertwined branches. It is light and elegant. The floral decorations on the cup body and the plate are natural and soft. It is a typical Rococo decoration technique. As for the decoration of the cup rim and the plate rim, neo-classical symmetrical geometric patterns are adopted, and the consecrated decorative frame is also embellished with the same pattern. The portrait of Maria Theresa is a profile bust, which obviously embezzled the portrait expression techniques of ancient Greece and Rome, which was a trend favored by neoclassicism that was emerging at that time. The overall color is matte and low-key, the cup body curve is gentle, and it is compact and stable. There is another set of numbers (25/24) on the bottom of the cup and the bottom of the plate, which are the numbers of the masters at that time. The decorative patterns and gold traces are slightly worn, and the cups are still in good condition. Viennese kilns from this period are rare, and those commemorating Maria Theresa are even rarer.
Antique cups that are more than two hundred years old are worthy of collection.
