Damascening—known as *damasquinado* or *damasquino* in Spanish—is the art of decorating steel with threads of gold and silver. It is an art of inlaying different metals into one another. (Typically, gold or silver is inlaid into a dark, oxidized steel background) to produce intricate patterns reminiscent of *niello*. The English term comes from the resemblance to the rich brocade patterns of damask silk. The technique is still practiced in cities with a long history of damascening, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Toledo, Spain, Eibar in the Basque Country, and Kyoto, Japan. This piece has a wonderful texture, but it is a pre-owned item.
