Historically, it was worn by men and typically made by mothers for their sons. Today, both men and women wear it during the Harvest Festival. During the Harvest Festival, the Amis people designate an evening as "Lover's Night." As they dance in circles, men form the inner circle and women the outer. Through dance, women can place betel nuts into the lover's bag of a man they admire, signifying their affection. If the man reciprocates, he may gift the lover's bag to the woman, announcing their relationship. Even after marriage, husbands often continue to wear the lover's bag, symbolizing their deep love for their wives and their commitment to a lifelong partnership. The lover's bag is traditionally worn diagonally across the body, from the right shoulder downwards. The twelve mirror-like ornaments on the strap represent the twelve months of the year.
