Made with soft-touch bleached cotton fabric. This piece is dyed using a paste-resist dyeing technique with two pattern stencils and colored paste. The base fabric is dyed and then tie-dyed, with paste applied individually to each piece, making it virtually a one-of-a-kind tenugui. The design was inspired by 14th-century Indian chintz patterns. It is said that coffee had not yet arrived in India around this time. However, setting historical facts aside, I imagined, "What if people in ancient times gathered to drink coffee under a coffee tree... they might get so joyful they'd start dancing... perhaps not in an Indian style, but a rumba!" and depicted that scene. The figure playing a flute near the center on the right is Krishna, a god often depicted in old Indian chintz. He came because everyone looked so happy. (Krishna is traditionally depicted in blue.) Birds also gathered because they love Krishna. The young man riding an elephant to pick coffee cherries appears surprised by the sudden arrival of the god.
