mashu is the original furoshiki brand from Kyoto's Baba Dyeing Studio. Founded in Fushimi, Kyoto, in 1913 (Taisho 2), over a century later, all our products are still meticulously hand-dyed by artisans using traditional katagami (stencil dyeing) techniques. Kyoto Toys Pattern: Kyoto's Beauty, Carrying Wishes This furoshiki features Fushimi dolls, originating from the late Momoyama period in Japan. To this day, these dolls are still exclusively produced by a single workshop in Fushimi, Kyoto, representing a historically significant traditional craft. The themes of "Fushimi dolls" are diverse, encompassing deities, yokai, Inari deities (foxes), and even cats, each with a unique and charming form. These dolls are seen as a tangible expression of the Japanese spirit and have been cherished for generations.
