Here in north-central India there is a beautiful handmade embroidery called Chikan embroidery which is 400 years old and has been passed down from mother to daughter. Chihkan City Show is a traditional embroidery that has flourished as the flower of Islamic court culture and has always been loved by the general public. Its characteristic is the use of white thread for embroidery on a transparent and thin pure white fabric. With over 30 rich stitches, including the special ‘shadow stitch’ where the needle is inserted from the back and the shadow of the thread is visible from the front, Chikan embroidery was recognised as a Lucknow Geographical Indication in 2008, officially recognised as an art form unique to Lucknow. The 250,000 Chikan embroidery craftsmen are even more proud of their work in this traditional industry. The climate here is extremely hot, with temperatures reaching over 45 degrees Celsius during the dry season. Although it has a long history and solemn Islamic culture, it also has a conservative, male-dominated atmosphere.
