He served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled in portraiture and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His artistic reputation was considerable; Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with her own hand, "Master of Capturing Likeness." This particular piece is one painting from the "Flower Gods of December" series.
