Cultural Journey Design Bag - Sanchong Style

The design process for the Cultural Journey Messenger Bag involved exploring neighborhoods, collecting streetscape imagery, and documenting through photography, all to immerse ourselves in the creative inspiration, emotional memories, and cultural context that a city offers. After photographing the Sanchong area, seven key images were selected, from which symbolic colors of the district were extracted to design seven corresponding styles. During its peak era of subcontracting, Sanchong's economy was driven by electrical appliances, lathes, and hardware components, leaving behind numerous processing factories. The colors of Sanchong are primarily drawn from glimpses within these factories, featuring metallic textures, machinery, wood carving molds, and tofu board racks. The collection also includes scenes from Sanchong's renowned self-service restaurant, "Fish Duo," and a traditional general store. These images evoke the spirit of Sanchong's factory artisans and their daily lives. The messenger bag is designed to be lightweight yet offer ample storage. It features two compartments: the main compartment can hold a notebook, water bottle, or umbrella, while the front compartment is ideal for small items like pens and keys. The adjustable strap allows users to switch between shoulder and crossbody wear, ensuring easy access to belongings while on the move. Each messenger bag comes with an inner tag explaining the colors derived from the scenery and an attachable pouch. The pouch can be used for storage and, when the bag is rolled up, secured by the drawstring at the top and the hardware clasp at the end. The Sanchong style features a gray webbing strap with a Sanchong ink-colored side tag. The pouch is a collaboration with a local embroidery manufacturer in Sanchong, featuring an elegant embroidered district name. The New Taipei City Cultural Foundation hopes that through field research, interviews, and the design of cultural journey objects, they can integrate lifestyle aesthetics to promote the historical development and industrial characteristics of various districts in New Taipei City. By engaging with local communities, this initiative encourages a re-evaluation of our relationship with the community environment, thereby conveying the spirit of humanistic history and local industries, and bringing the unique local landscapes of New Taipei to the forefront.
