Ñandutí is a term from the indigenous Guaraní language, meaning "spider web." True to its name, it is a delicate handicraft made from thread. A base warp is set up, and then other threads are woven or knotted to create patterns. Once the embroidery is starched and solidified, and the embroidered section is separated from the fabric, Ñandutí is complete. The finished pieces have a firm, slightly crisp texture that holds its shape while retaining the softness inherent to the threads.
