The fabric used for our straw hats, which have been a staple for 17 years, is made by hand-spinning linen yarn and then hand-weaving it. Due to the impact of COVID-19, fabric production was halted during a period of decreased hat demand. This led to the artisans moving on to other work, making fabric production difficult by the time the pandemic subsided. We have been searching for alternative fabrics, but as there is no viable option in sight at the moment, we are very disappointed to announce that production of our straw hats will end with the current bolt of fabric. The cultivation area for flax itself is decreasing globally, making it a precious resource. We are very grateful to the artisans who secured and wove the linen fibers specifically for kubomi. The discontinuation date for the hats depends on the number of orders received, so it is difficult to predict. However, if you are considering a purchase, please let your friends know and place your order to avoid missing out.
