Lavacourt is a village in the Paris region, located on the left bank of the Seine, opposite the village of Vétheuil where Monet was in September 1878. The winter of 1879 was particularly harsh. Paris and its surrounding areas were paralyzed by heavy snow, and all traffic stopped. Despite the severe cold, Monet painted about 20 paintings in the first few months of 1880, observing the slow melting of the ice on the Seine. At that time, due to lack of money, the painter tried again to enter the official salon. After rejecting his work in 1870, he gave up the impressionist exhibition. For the Salon of 1880, Monet deliberately prepared Lavacourt's work selected by a low-key view jury, and the flooded landscape showing the melting ice on the Seine-undoubtedly the painting of the Petit Palace-was rejected. In fact, in the second work, Monet made painting experiments more free. The terrain of the village is barely reflected here, and the use of colors emphasizes the importance of air and water. The effect of cold fog is conveyed in fine and smooth brushstrokes in the upper third of the painting. The water and river banks are painted with wider brushstrokes and thickly painted highlights. The orange sunset in the center of the composition is reminiscent of the famous painting "Impression, Sunrise" in 1872 (Paris, Marmottan Museum), whose title is the origin of the word Impressionism.
