Crafted from 100% mulberry silk spun-silk fabric, it is crisp, drapes beautifully, and possesses a rich texture. The process begins with repeated plant dyeing using Dioscorea cirrhosa, initially yielding a front and back coffee-brown hue. This is followed by covering the fabric with river mud. The mud application creates a dual AB color effect: the mud-covered areas become black, while the uncovered areas retain their coffee-brown. After washing off the mud and drying, the fabric is complete. The entire process is meticulously manual, involving anywhere from a dozen to several dozen steps depending on the desired style and intensity. Crucially, it requires exposure to the intense sun during the hottest summer months. The river mud itself must be washed multiple times. Consequently, each roll of Xiangyunsha fabric is limited in quantity, typically no more than ten to twenty meters. This limitation arises because the manual process necessitates cutting the fabric into smaller lengths to accommodate the numerous steps. It is precisely this artisanal approach that makes each piece of Xiangyunsha unique, much like the leaves in a vast forest – no two are alike. The handcrafting is evident, with the fabric surface displaying an irregular, cracked pattern. It feels smooth yet possesses a distinct structure, offering exceptional coolness against the skin. Like a Yixing clay teapot, it benefits from human touch; the more it is worn, the softer and more skin-friendly it becomes, and its luster deepens. In bygone eras, a new Xiangyunsha garment would often be entrusted to a "servant" to be worn and nurtured for a period, until it became translucent, lustrous, and exceptionally soft, before being worn by its owner. The black and coffee-brown hues have practical limitations, leading to the development of various colored silks, including reds, purples, and a spectrum of other colors, as well as various prints. Currently, black is the most favored. Previously, a black-blue was used once, but subsequent creations have been exclusively black. This involves an additional black dyeing process on top of the AB dual-color base, resulting in a double-sided black effect. The two black sides exhibit different sheens: the river mud-dyed side possesses a superior luster and a more refined texture, while the reverse side has a matte finish.
