Xiangyunsha, a piece of intangible cultural heritage, undergoes an additional process for its black iteration. Crafted from 100% mulberry silk spun-silk fabric, it is crisp, drapes beautifully, and possesses a rich texture. The process begins with repeated plant dyeing using Dioscorea cirrhosa, initially yielding a front and back coffee-brown hue. This is followed by covering the fabric with river mud. The mud application creates a dual AB color effect: the mud-covered areas become black, while the uncovered areas retain their coffee-brown. After washing off the mud and drying, the fabric is complete.
The entire process is meticulously manual, involving anywhere from a dozen to several dozen steps depending on the desired style and intensity. Crucially, it requires exposure to the intense sun during the hottest summer months. The river mud itself must be washed multiple times. Consequently, each roll of Xiangyunsha fabric is limited in quantity, typically no more than ten to twenty meters. This limitation arises because the manual process necessitates cutting the fabric into smaller lengths to accommodate the numerous steps.
The entire sun-drying and dyeing process for Xiangyunsha is intricate, involving stages such as: raw silk refining, immersion in Dioscorea cirrhosa extract, drying, repeating the immersion and drying process multiple times, boiling the silk, washing out the Dioscorea cirrhosa extract repeatedly, boiling again, washing out the extract again, boiling once more, drying, mud application, washing, drying, misting, stretching, and finally warehousing. The entire sun-drying phase alone involves "three washes, nine boils, and eighteen sun-dries," totaling dozens of procedures.
It is precisely this artisanal approach that makes each piece of Xiangyunsha unique, much like the leaves in a vast forest – no two are alike. The handcrafting is evident, with the fabric surface displaying an irregular, cracked pattern. It feels smooth yet possesses a distinct structure, offering exceptional coolness against the skin. Like a Yixing clay teapot, it benefits from human touch; the more it is worn, the softer and more skin-friendly it becomes, and its luster deepens. In bygone eras, a new Xiangyunsha garment would often be entrusted to a "servant" to be worn and nurtured for a period, until it became translucent, lustrous, and exceptionally soft, before being worn by its owner.
"Cai Liang" (colored silk) represents a later refinement by contemporary artisans. The black and coffee-brown hues have practical limitations, leading to the development of various colored silks, including reds, purples, and a spectrum of other colors, as well as various prints. Currently, black is the most favored. Previously, a black-blue was used once, but subsequent creations have been exclusively black. This involves an additional black dyeing process on top of the AB dual-color base, resulting in a double-sided black effect. The two black sides exhibit different sheens: the river mud-dyed side possesses a superior luster and a more refined texture, while the reverse side has a matte finish.
It is both stylish and composed. The loose-fitting pants, presented in Xiangyunsha fabric, possess a tactile structure. Wearing them lends a sense of quiet sophistication and depth to the lower body, evoking a free-spirited poem.
These Xiangyunsha carrot pants are effortlessly chic. Featuring a comfortable elasticated waistband with an external drawstring, a wide waistband, a button-fly closure, and a few deep black, fruit-like buttons, they exude a sense of relaxed elegance. The generous cut of the pants provides ample room, with legs that are both loose and subtly tapered. This design creates a full, three-dimensional silhouette that offers exceptional comfort and a flattering fit. Notably, the inner cuff is intentionally made wider, concealing the hand-stitching on the reverse side within the generous fold.
Black is cool and versatile, complementing everything.
Care Instructions:
Hand wash gently; do not machine wash. Xiangyunsha requires specific care. Slight color bleeding upon initial washing is normal; do not soak. Rinse once in clean water. Avoid laundry detergent; a small amount of baby body wash can be used as a substitute. Do not machine wash, rub vigorously, wring, or expose to direct sunlight. Xiangyunsha fabric exhibits rich variations due to its artisanal, non-standardized production. Expect variations in color depth, the presence of cracking on each piece, differences in luster intensity, and potential color discrepancies. Slight fading of the pants is also normal, and other unforeseen characteristics may be present. For those unfamiliar with Xiangyunsha, please review the product description carefully.
