※ Author Introduction
Maurice Maeterlinck (1862–1949) [Belgium]
A Belgian poet, playwright, and essayist, and the recipient of the 1911 Nobel Prize in Literature. Hailed as the "Belgian Shakespeare," Maeterlinck was interested in literature from a young age. However, at his father's urging, he completed his law studies in Belgium before moving to Paris, France, to officially dedicate himself to writing. His works are characterized by delicate emotions and are filled with observations and explorations of life.
Wu Cheng'en (1504–1582) [China]
A renowned novelist of the Ming Dynasty. He was intelligent and well-read from childhood and enjoyed folk tales. In his later years, he immersed himself in writing, drawing inspiration from the true historical event of a Tang Dynasty monk's journey to the West. He combined religious mythology and folk legends to create the highly fantastical, subversive, and satirical Chinese masterpiece "Journey to the West," which appears colloquial and playful yet possesses profound literary depth. This book presents accessible "light" classical Chinese and poetic rhythms, allowing children to easily appreciate the beauty of literature.
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930)
A British detective novelist and physician. After graduating from the Edinburgh University School of Medicine, Doyle practiced medicine in Plymouth. However, due to his less than successful career, he began writing. In 1887, "A Study in Scarlet," featuring Holmes as the protagonist, was Doyle's first detective novel. Upon its release, the work was immensely popular, leading him to write fifty-six short stories and four novels. Doyle, through the perspective of Watson in his books, depicts Holmes' thrilling and dramatic detective life. His writing style, akin to a documentary, guides readers step by step to understand the truth of judicial justice.
Charles Dickens (1812–1870)
An English literary figure. His father was imprisoned for debt, and the family moved into the prison with him. Dickens was then sent to work as an apprentice in a shoe polish factory. Perhaps due to experiencing these hardships and the cold realities of life, his later works often focused on the lives of the lower classes of society. His novel "David Copperfield" accurately reflects his own bitter experiences.
