This clay is made by uniquely blending white and red clay of various coarseness, and kneading it into a composition that can only be achieved at that time. It has a softer color than red clay alone, and has a warmth that is more characteristic of earthenware than white clay alone. The clay was shaped into a gently curved, shallow bowl, and then fired in a kerosene kiln at the pottery studio I am currently working with, rather than in the electric kiln I normally use at home. The pottery is fired using a method called reduction firing, which creates an oxygen shortage inside the kiln during firing, allowing you to enjoy a refined flavor that cannot be produced in an electric furnace. The two types of glazes used are straw ash glaze and celadon glaze. By applying a thin layer of celadon glaze to the entire vessel and then layering a straw ash glaze on top, the finished product has an interesting look with flowing patterns and crystals floating against the bluish-white color. Both types of glazes are original to the pottery manufacturer, and offer colors and textures that cannot be found anywhere else. The size makes it suitable for use as a serving bowl or as a single-serving dish. It can be used to serve simmered or stir-fried dishes, rice for rice bowls, pasta and other noodles, and stews. I use a small electric kiln and an electric potter's wheel at home to make my pottery, and I do all of the processes by hand, from kneading the clay to shaping, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing. It is a little heavy to hold, but that makes it feel like pottery. Although we cannot mass-produce them, each one has its own unique expression, and you can enjoy the flavor that comes from being made by hand.
