Collection description Ding Guanpeng entered the court in the fourth year of Yongzheng (1726), and his reputation gradually increased during the Qianlong period. There is no other record after he resigned due to illness in the 35th year of Qianlong (1770). Ding Guanpeng was good at figures and could imitate ancient paintings. In addition to landscape and figure paintings such as Luo Shen Fu, he was also commissioned to imitate religious themes. According to scholars' research, this painting of Manjusri Bodhisattva was painted in the 27th year of Qianlong's reign, and is speculated to be related to the image of Manjusri in Mount Wutai painted by Emperor Qianlong. The backlight is decorated with auspicious themes such as flowers and bats, and the face and hands are expressed using a sfumato technique to create a three-dimensional light and shadow effect, showing the influence of Castiglione's Western techniques.
