Taichung Imagined Special Issue × Tonight I'm a Writer

This work originated from a set of old photos of Taichung accidentally browsed online. The photographer was Leland Sills, a retired serviceman from the United States, who captured these images of Taichung during the period of American aid, while transiting through CCK (Ching Chuan Kang) Air Base in Taichung aboard a C-130. Due to a general lack of understanding and knowledge regarding copyright among many Taiwanese netizens, photos are often reposted or shared without proper attribution to the source or photographer. Argi Chang, founder of Let’s Zine based in Taichung, frequently produces independent local publications focusing on Taichung. He proactively contacted Kite, the director of No. 7 Reading Room, and the photographer. Through several rounds of correspondence, he sought permission to publish a series of photos of Taichung. After communication, the author granted permission to use the copyright of the film negatives. Furthermore, there was a desire to ensure these photographs transcended the digital realm. The elderly Leland Sills had the fortune to document a fleeting glimpse of Taichung at that time, and in doing so, recorded the daily life in Taichung under American aid. Given his professional background, the photographer did not reveal extensive personal details or context within the photos. The editor, Argi, instead invited text creators, Wu Ji-Zhen from Tonight I'm a Writer to write in Chinese, and Kite, the director of No. 7 Reading Room, to contribute in English, to collaboratively complete this photography collection. The aim is to preserve more lesser-known facets of Taichung's landscape.
