◎ Liu Dao Mu, also known as Dragon Subduing Wood, grows in the sacred Buddhist site of Mount Wutai. Each bead features six naturally formed grain lines, symbolizing the six-syllable mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum), and also represents the "six realms of existence." It is believed to protect the home and ward off evil.
Our Workshop's Craftsmanship Standards for Liu Dao Wood:
Due to the high density and hardness of Liu Dao wood, dry grinding with machinery can easily lead to cracks. Our meticulous craftsmanship involves a semi-mechanical, semi-handcrafted process for bead turning, with a particular focus on preserving the integrity of the bead hole. In contrast, ordinary pieces may suffer from misaligned bead holes.
"Full Bloom" or "Full Grain" signifies the use of aged Liu Dao wood for bead turning. Compared to new seeds, the color is deeper, and the grain lines are more distinct.
Many Liu Dao wood beads with "green" lines are made from new wood. Matured seeds are typically brown, denser, and easier to polish, developing a lustrous patina over time.
Liu Dao wood is a prime example of demanding craftsmanship! For those who appreciate transformation, new wood Liu Dao or Xingyue Bodhi beads offer a captivating journey of color and patina development. Historically, due to different meditative practices, many Liu Dao wood pieces underwent natural dyeing processes such as "cinnabar offering" and "butter offering." Otherwise, the original color of Liu Dao wood is white, turning brown after prolonged handling.
The Buddhist Significance of Liu Dao Wood:
Liu Dao Mu, also known as Dragon Subduing Wood, grows in the sacred Buddhist site of Mount Wutai. Each bead features six naturally formed grain lines, symbolizing the six-syllable mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum), and also represents the "six realms of existence." It is believed to protect the home and ward off evil.
In Tibetan Buddhism, blessed by the great master Tsongkhapa of the Gelug school, the six white lines represent the six wisdom swords of Manjushri, which can sever the afflictions of sentient beings. The six realms (six grain lines) also symbolize the six-syllable mantra (Avalokiteśvara's Heart Mantra): Om Mani Padme Hum. Therefore, it is an ideal mala for chanting Manjushri's epithet, Manjushri's heart mantra, and Avalokiteśvara's mantra (the six-syllable mantra). It is also associated with the concept of "borrowing the six realms to transcend the six realms" and is a suitable mala for practices related to Manjushri in Esoteric Buddhism. Many monks in the Exoteric tradition also favor wearing it.
