The entire piece was cut using a piece of equipment called a "hishiyama," and common patterns that can be made using the tool were selected and cut. Also, since the design is based on New Year's decorations, such as kadomatsu (traditional Japanese pine decorations), fans, bamboo, and chrysanthemums, I think it has a distinctively Japanese and traditional feel.
