▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰
Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita re-established its Damascene factory in Kyoto in 1946 after World War II. In 1952, Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. was officially designated by the Japanese government as a retail store for export (duty-free shop), producing many items for export to the West. This also allowed the proprietor to collect some Japanese pieces from Western collectors.
The art of metal inlay, with origins dating back over 2000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria, was later introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century by the Moors. Around the same period, it also traveled to Japan via the Silk Road.
The technique involves creating a base of iron or copper alloy, into which fine lines are etched. Thin sheets of pure gold and silver are then fashioned into patterns and hammered into these etched lines. The piece is then enameled and fired to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal, followed by polishing and detailed engraving. Finally, it is set into jewelry.
