The pottery studio in Fukuoka that I work with fires pottery in a climbing kiln once a year. A climbing kiln is a type of wood-fired kiln that uses firewood to cook the pot without using electricity, kerosene, or gas. The temperature inside the furnace reaches as high as 1,300°C, and as the molten glaze gets splashed with wood ash and the flames hit the base, each piece takes on a pattern that cannot be controlled by human hands. The firing process takes more than a week, from firing to taking the clay out of the kiln. The flavor that resides in each piece is truly exceptional, speaking of the power of the flame and the hard work and experience of the people who bring it out. In addition, the straw ash glaze used is an original glaze created by the pottery maker. Apparently, he makes his own glaze every year by baking rice straw after the harvest, and when I first heard this story, I nodded deeply in agreement, thinking that this is where the flavor of the glaze comes from. This flower lover was born from such time and effort. This piece was fired several years ago and has been carefully stored, and of course is unused. The parts that were covered in ash during firing are rough and scratchy, but this is a characteristic of climbing kilns and is by no means a defect, but I was hesitant to put the piece up for sale as I thought it might make it a little difficult to use in everyday life. However, after several years of creating and selling my works, I have had the opportunity to once again realize that there is a certain charm and flavor that can only be created by making them by hand, and by using a fire to fire the vessels, so I have decided to exhibit my works.
