India is a land where everything is divine, with reportedly 333 million deities; it's hard even for a deity to become famous. Ganesha (meaning "Lord of the Hosts"), with his distinctive elephant head and human body, primarily symbolizes wisdom, wealth, fulfillment, and good fortune, encompassing nearly all beautiful aspirations in life. Therefore, regardless of religious or non-religious reasons, on ordinary or special days—including openings, groundbreakings, weddings, long journeys, apprenticeships, the start of school, or the operation of new vehicles or machinery—many Indians pay homage to Ganesha.
Ganesha is not only immensely popular in India but also revered in Tibet and Japan for bringing wealth. Especially in Thailand, Ganesha is likely the most prayed-to deity after the Four-Faced Buddha.
The Origin of the Elephant-Headed Human Form
Indian mythology is rich, with several versions of Ganesha's story. The most widespread version states that Ganesha is the son of Shiva, one of the three main Hindu deities, and the goddess Parvati.
However, Parvati gave birth to Ganesha after Shiva went into asceticism, so Shiva had never met his son. Years later, when Shiva returned home and attempted to enter, he was blocked by Ganesha at the door.
Since Parvati was bathing at the time and had specifically instructed Ganesha not to let anyone in, Ganesha, faithfully executing his mother's orders, enraged the unaware Shiva. The two fought, and Shiva, the god of both creation and destruction, decapitated Ganesha. Afterward, a heartbroken Parvati demanded that Shiva resurrect their son.
Shiva then sought help from Vishnu, another principal deity who guards life. Vishnu advised him to bring the head of the first living creature he encountered outside and attach it to Ganesha's body for resurrection. The first creature Shiva encountered was an elephant.
Later, as compensation, Shiva appointed the elephant-headed Ganesha as the leader of the gods who serve him, granting Ganesha the ability to overcome all obstacles with the help of the divine host.
Ganesha brings wisdom, wealth, fulfillment, and good fortune. Therefore, during his birthday celebrations in August and September each year (depending on the Hindu calendar), typically after the monsoon season ends, Ganesha festivals begin across India.
The duration varies, lasting three, five, seven, or ten days, with Mumbai hosting the grandest celebration, which spans 11 days. These festivals also mark the prelude to the Indian New Year—Diwali (the Festival of Lights).
During the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, devotees craft Ganesha idols from clay and plaster for home worship. Offerings include coconuts, garlands, incense sticks, fresh fruits, and sweet rice cakes. On the final day, a grand ceremony is held, and the Ganesha idol is carried to the water—be it the sea or a river—before being immersed, symbolizing a return to nature.
Incidentally, perhaps due to Ganesha, or perhaps not, elephants hold a significance for Indians similar to dragons for the Chinese; they are considered auspicious animals. Ancient Indians used elephants as mounts in warfare; nowadays, wealthy Indians display their status by riding elephants at weddings. A surge in the Indian stock market is referred to as an "elephant stampede." Essentially, Indians believe elephants are the most memorable, steadfast, and friendly animals.
