Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its firm and durable texture. In Taiwan's early days, before plastic products were common, many items were made using this material, such as drive belts for early sewing machines, bicycle saddles, rural tools, and military accessories... and so on. https://www.dozi.com.tw/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/websiteimg-0007.jpg A characteristic of vegetable-tanned leather is how its color deepens over time due to the plant-based tannins interacting with air or sunlight. The surface color gradually darkens. Combined with the natural oils from your hands and the friction from daily use, it develops a lustrous patina. This allows leather goods made from vegetable-tanned leather to transform uniquely with time and the user's habits. Leather is a byproduct of the livestock industry. Therefore, farmers do not pay special attention to protecting the cattle's skin. As a result, cattle may experience insect bites, scratches, or punctures during their lives. Free-ranging cattle might also bear branding marks. They develop growth lines and wrinkles as they mature. In cases of difficult births for cows, there might be stitches from a C-section. When the cattle reach maturity for meat consumption, the skinning process can also result in cuts. These marks are faithfully preserved on the leather when it is processed, serving as proof of the animal's life journey. They often send their hides to processing plants for surface sanding and then apply coatings, resulting in a very clean surface but lacking natural character. At DOZI Leather Studio, we generally do not avoid using these natural marks from the cattle unless they are excessively large. The resulting characters will appear as a charred black. Therefore, this service cannot be used on black, dark blue, or other dark-colored leathers. ▴ Some items require laser engraving before production. Ready-made items cannot be laser engraved and must be scheduled separately. Please contact customer service to inquire about production times when selecting this service. 🌞 Care and Maintenance -------------------- Frequent use is the best form of maintenance. Avoid storing leather in damp environments. If the leather gets wet, wipe it immediately with a dry cloth and let it air dry in a cool, ventilated area. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, as this can harden and degrade the leather. Once dry, you can apply leather conditioning oil to replenish the leather's oils. You can also spray a waterproofing agent on the surface to protect against accidental spills and enhance surface protection. If the leather item needs to be stored or will not be used for an extended period, place it in an electronic dehumidifier, maintaining humidity levels between 50% and 60% to prevent mold. Alternatively, use a sealed bag with a desiccant pack for a similar effect. The leather materials selected by our studio favor natural qualities. Cowhide is not excessively processed or coated with heavy surface treatments. There will inevitably be variations in color, texture, and minor scratches. If you require a flawless, clean leather surface, it may be difficult to fulfill your request, and we regret that we cannot accept requests for "clean leather surfaces." Additionally, once lettering or laser engraving has been applied, returns are not accepted unless there was a production error.
