Within his creations, one can find an engaging yet subtly brutal truth. What appears to be childlike innocence is, in fact, the most precise observation and satire of everyday life. In Shrigley's lexicon, seriousness is not the antonym of humour; the antonym of humour is tragedy. Everyone experiences low points and dark moments. Sometimes, no matter what we do, we cannot change anything, so it is better to find the humour within. "A life without a sense of humour is a tragic one, and the ability to laugh is a luxury everyone can afford," Shrigley stated in an interview. His distinctive black humour, unparalleled wit, and endless surprises were fully displayed at his major exhibition "Brain Activity" at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2012. The following year, he was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize, and one of his main sculptural works was collected by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
