Origin Introduction | Akoya and Freshwater Pearl Origins & History
Our pearls, depending on the variety, are sourced from two major production regions: Japan and China. All are processed and crafted in professional Chinese jewelry workshops, ensuring stable quality, exquisite craftsmanship, and the perfect presentation of the pearls' natural luster and charm.
🔹 China Origin | Freshwater Cultured Pearls
China is the world's largest producer of freshwater pearls, with major cultivation areas concentrated in Zhejiang, Hunan, Jiangsu, and Anhui. Freshwater pearls are primarily cultured from large mussel species like the triangle sail mussel, with a single mussel capable of nurturing dozens of pearls simultaneously, yielding far more than saltwater pearls. In the past decade, with significant upgrades in cultivation technology and selection standards, high-quality freshwater pearls have achieved levels approaching Akoya pearls in roundness, nacre compactness, and luster.
Although they are beadless cultured pearls, top-grade freshwater pearls can be nearly spherical, possess a warm and translucent luster, exhibit strong orient, and are offered at a more accessible price point. They are a highly cost-effective choice for everyday wear and designer jewelry.
🔹 Akoya (A-ko-ya) Saltwater Pearls, Masumi Pearls | Japan Origin
Akoya pearls are the most representative type of saltwater cultured pearls. They are primarily cultured in Mie, Kumamoto, and Ehime prefectures in Japan, with the coast of the Seto Inland Sea being particularly renowned. Akoya pearls are nurtured by the **Pinctada fucata** oyster. Due to the smaller size of the oyster, each shell can only yield one pearl, and it requires approximately 3 years of careful cultivation. Consequently, production is relatively scarce, and quality and price are correspondingly high.
Our pearls, depending on the variety, are sourced from two major production regions: Japan and China. All are processed and crafted in professional Chinese jewelry workshops, ensuring stable quality, exquisite craftsmanship, and the perfect presentation of the pearls' natural luster and charm.
Akoya pearls are nucleated cultured pearls, known for their exceptionally high roundness and a cool, bright luster, earning them the nickname "little light bulbs" of the pearl world. Their surface often exhibits a natural "orange peel" texture. If you select a special grade (with a Japanese certificate), they can be nearly flawless with even more transparent luster. Colors include sakura pink, snow white, bluish-pink, cool blue light, aurora gold, and queen color, among others. There are also rare Masumi types, a variation of Akoya with natural purplish-pink overtones, highly favored by collectors.
Regardless of whether you choose Akoya saltwater pearls or Chinese freshwater pearls, all products are crafted in our Chinese processing workshops. This ensures that every piece, from raw material to intricate details, meets jewelry-grade standards, adding an elegant touch to your daily life.

Unsure whether to choose freshwater or Akoya pearls?
Here's a comparison:
I. Origin & Cultivation
Akoya Pearls
Akoya pearls are saltwater cultured pearls, primarily from Japan, but also cultured in Vietnam and China. The mother oyster for Akoya pearls is the Pinctada fucata, which requires growth in seawater environments with high salinity and complex currents. Typically, one oyster yields only one pearl.
Akoya cultivation cycles are relatively long, around 3-5 years. Akoya's annual yield is low, accounting for about 10% of the global total pearl production (saltwater pearls combined). Akoya was the world's first commercially produced saltwater cultured pearl, beginning in the early 1900s. Saltwater cultured pearls (including Akoya) are usually bead-nucleated, where a spherical bead nucleus is implanted into the oyster.
Freshwater Pearls
Freshwater pearls are cultured in freshwater environments such as lakes and rivers, with main production areas in the lakes and rivers of China's Yangtze River basin, including Zhejiang, Hunan, and Jiangsu. The primary mother oyster for freshwater pearls is the triangle sail mussel, and the growth environment has stable and controllable water quality. One mussel can yield 10-40 or 30-50 pearls. Most freshwater pearls form naturally within the mussel without a bead nucleus (primarily beadless cultivation), which leads to less regular shapes. The cultivation cycle for freshwater pearls is relatively short, about 1-3 years.
Freshwater pearls account for the vast majority of global pearl production, about 95%. Nucleated freshwater cultured pearls are also known as "Edison" pearls. Natural pearls and beadless cultured pearls are almost entirely composed of nacre.
II. Appearance - Shape & Size
Shape:
Due to the implantation of a round bead nucleus during cultivation and a relatively thin nacre layer that helps maintain roundness, Akoya pearls typically achieve very round shapes with a high percentage of perfectly round specimens.
Over 90% of high-quality Akoya pearls are nearly perfect spheres. The roundness of Akoya pearls commonly available to consumers is generally good.
Freshwater cultured pearls (primarily beadless) form naturally without a bead nucleus, making their shapes more prone to being oval or irregular. Over 80% of freshwater pearls on the market are oval, flattened oval, or baroque in shape, with a lower proportion of perfectly round ones. As they are beadless, perfectly round freshwater pearls are extremely rare; near-round is considered the highest roundness grade. Nucleated freshwater cultured pearls (Edison pearls) are similar in size to saltwater pearls but have lower roundness.
Size:
Akoya pearls are generally smaller, with commercial production typically ranging from 6-9mm, often in the 6-8mm or 5-8mm range. 8mm is considered a good size, and the largest Akoya can reach 10-11mm.
The larger the size of an Akoya pearl, the more valuable it is. Even a difference of 1mm, such as between 7-8mm and 8-9mm Akoya pearls, can result in a significant price difference.
The diameter range for freshwater cultured pearls is usually between 5-12mm. Nucleated freshwater pearls (Edison pearls) can reach sizes of 12-20mm. South Sea pearls are most commonly found between 10-16mm, with those exceeding 16mm being relatively rare and valuable.
III. Appearance - Color
Akoya pearls are primarily white. Common overtones include pink, light blue-green, and light yellow-green, with pink being the most popular. Akoya also come in blue tones (like Masumi) and yellow tones (like Aurora Queen, Aurora Gold). Saltwater pearls (including Akoya) do not come in purple. Pearl colors originate from minerals or natural pigments secreted by the oyster.
Freshwater cultured pearls are mainly white, pink, and light purple. Purple is a unique color for freshwater pearls, derived from carotenoids in the triangle sail mussel. Nucleated freshwater cultured pearls (Edison pearls) can exhibit deep purple or bronze colors. Freshwater pearls do not come in pure black or intense gold. Some colors may be treated through bleaching or dyeing.
IV. Appearance - Luster
Pearl luster is a key factor in determining quality, even considered its soul. Luster is related to the thickness and quality of the nacre. The stronger the luster, the more valuable and expensive the pearl. Luster is the most important value factor for pearls.
Akoya pearls are renowned for their very high and beautiful luster, often called the "little light bulb of the human world." Their luster is strong, producing sharp reflections with clear imaging. In top-quality comparisons, the mirror-like luster of Akoya can surpass that of South Sea pearls. High-quality specimens can reflect a person's face.
The luster of freshwater cultured pearls is relatively softer, primarily diffuse reflection, with a silky smoothness. Some high-quality freshwater pearls can achieve good luster, reaching 70%-80% of saltwater pearls. Some higher-grade freshwater pearls can achieve "extra strong light." The luster of freshwater pearls is shallower, with weaker refractive effects. GUILD grades pearl luster into four levels: Very good, Good, Fair, and Poor.
V. Appearance - Surface Quality
Naturally formed pearls usually have some minor blemishes on their surface. The fewer blemishes a pearl has, the higher its quality. Absolutely perfect pearls are extremely rare and expensive.
Akoya pearls generally have a high degree of surface smoothness, with blemishes often appearing as tiny pinpricks.
The surface of freshwater pearls may show growth lines or depressions.
Surface quality is graded into four levels: Very good (near flawless), Good (minor blemishes), Fair (moderate blemishes), and Poor (numerous blemishes). Blemish count is one factor in determining pearl quality.
VI. Physical Characteristics - Nacre Thickness & Durability
Nacre thickness is an important factor in evaluating bead-nucleated cultured pearls. Nacre thickness affects the pearl's beauty and durability. A too-thin nacre layer can diminish luster and may lead to a loss of luster or even "skin peeling" with wear.
Akoya pearls have relatively thin nacre layers compared to other types of saltwater cultured pearls. Typically, they range from 0.15mm to 0.55mm. 0.5mm is considered a thick nacre layer for Akoya. According to GUILD standards, Akoya with nacre thickness greater than 0.4mm are of better quality. Akoya are most sensitive to nacre thickness. Akoya's thinner nacre layers help them achieve a rounder shape.
Freshwater cultured pearls (primarily beadless) usually have a nacre thickness of 0.3 to 0.8mm. The internal structure of beadless freshwater pearls is almost entirely composed of nacre. Prolonged wear of freshwater pearls may cause them to gradually lose luster due to friction, resulting in a shorter lifespan. Nucleated freshwater cultured pearls (Edison) have thicker nacre layers, which can reach 0.8-3mm.
Overall, saltwater pearls have thicker nacre layers and longer lifespans. Saltwater pearls (such as South Sea, Tahitian) typically have nacre layers ranging from 0.8-3mm, with South Sea pearls' nacre reaching up to 2mm, which is 60 to 100 times that of Akoya.
VII. Daily Wear & Suitability
Akoya pearls, with their high luster, roundness, and classic white color, are a highly popular choice for everyday wear. They are suitable for versatile necklace designs that convey elegance, luxury, and classic style. They are also appropriate for formal occasions, weddings, and business gifts.
Freshwater cultured pearls, owing to their affordability (thanks to China's large production volume and cultivation methods) and diverse colors (especially baroque shapes), are a popular choice for daily commuting and casual styling. High-quality freshwater pearls (with extra strong light, near-round shape, and minimal blemishes) are visually indistinguishable from saltwater pearls to the naked eye and offer excellent value for money, making them ideal for everyday wear. They are suitable for students, new professionals, or baroque pearl enthusiasts. If you have a limited budget and primarily wear pearls daily, high-quality freshwater pearls are an excellent choice. From a purely functional perspective, high-quality freshwater pearls and saltwater pearls offer very similar wearing experiences.
