It was used to record orthodox history, the chronicles of emperors' reigns, and the histories of ancient noble families. The *Shiji* was published in 90 BCE, making it 2114 years removed from our present day. The *Shiji* has its own history, and throughout that history, it has been both criticized and cherished by many. For us today, perhaps the biggest difference from people of ancient times is freedom. Every book has its origins; though their content may differ greatly, the commonality lies in a person, at a certain moment, taking up a pen to record their emotions and thoughts, which accumulate over time. Such books, regardless of whether their authors were famous, hold significance and remain history for people millennia from now. So, what do you wish to record? What do you want to tell future generations? What do we need to possess to write a book that keeps pace with the times? Driven by these thoughts, we created the concept behind the *Shiji* and the Journal. This is also how we differentiate between our larger and smaller volumes: the A5, which can accommodate more content and presents a more expansive feel, we named *Shiji*; the B6, which records less but is significantly more portable, we named Journal. **Why Choose Handmade?** To imbue our products with the functionality to keep pace with the times, we selected cowhide leather and even applied edge paint to the edges of the leather and paper. Beyond the selection and design of materials and inner pages, there are many unseen considerations, such as choosing handmade production. Machines can greatly simplify the manufacturing process for us, even saving time and effort. However, there are many outcomes that machines simply cannot achieve. Based on past less-than-ideal experiences and visits to various large factories, we've learned that even the craft of thread binding has its limits. We don't seek speed; we want to create a product with care. Therefore, we strive to control the variations and processes of each material ourselves. Perhaps this is why some assume our homepage hasn't been updated, or why our products seem expensive? These are very practical considerations, indeed XDDDD. Value is value; you get what you pay for has always been our belief, something we want consumers to feel. Please do not repost images. **Important Notes on Cowhide Leather** 1. Leather is a natural material, much like our own skin. It will have textures, scratches, growth lines, insect bite scars, etc. We insist on not covering these natural marks with chemical coatings, preserving the natural charm of the leather. 2. The color of natural leather can vary slightly under different lighting conditions. There will also be minor discrepancies between camera and computer screen displays. We use high-quality Hasselblad cameras with excellent color fidelity to present the product's colors as accurately as possible and minimize variations. 3. It is normal for leather to be accidentally scratched during use, just as we might accidentally scratch our skin while itching. This is especially true for vegetable-tanned leather, where marks can be more apparent. However, with long-term use or by gently rubbing with the oils from your fingers, these marks may fade or even disappear. This process is what gives leather its patina of time, making it more storied and smooth over time. 4. Leather can be regularly maintained with leather conditioner. Simply wipe off dust with a soft cloth, apply the conditioner, allow the leather to absorb the oil, and then wipe off any excess with a clean, soft cloth. Using leather conditioner offers many benefits: it can smooth out scratches, maintain shine, and prevent the leather from moisture damage or mold. For leather products used frequently, it is recommended to periodically condition the leather or to frequently touch it to keep it moisturized. 5. Leather should not be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause fading and discoloration. In severe cases, it can lead to the evaporation of oils and moisture, causing the leather to crack. 6. Leather should not come into frequent contact with water, as it can cause water stains, and dampness can lead to mold. If it accidentally gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. If you plan to use leather products for extended outdoor excursions, regularly apply leather conditioner to ensure the leather is protected. **Important Notes on Tomoe River Paper** 1. Tomoe River Paper's lightness is 68 gsm. Papers below 70 gsm are considered thin papers. They present greater processing challenges compared to thicker papers and are also much more susceptible to moisture. We make every effort during processing to prevent moisture absorption, but the paper can still change with environmental conditions and temperature. Therefore, minor, inconspicuous marks on the paper are normal and do not affect its usability. 2. Tomoe River Paper is suitable for writing with fountain pens. The pen nib glides smoothly across the paper, so you don't need to worry about damaging expensive nibs or tearing the paper. 3. Tomoe River Paper has a certain capacity for holding ink, but it will still bleed if excessively wet. However, under normal fountain pen use for drawing, it is perfectly fine. 4. Although Tomoe River Paper is thin, it is resistant to ink bleed-through. This doesn't mean ink is completely invisible, but rather that it does not affect the writing on the next page. 5. For those who prefer using gel pens over fountain pens, it's advisable to apply light pressure when writing to avoid leaving indentations on the subsequent page from the previous writing. 6. Tomoe River Paper offers excellent ink saturation and does not feather, making it a preferred choice for fountain pen enthusiasts.
