Many years ago, I watched a documentary about African elephants. In a conflict over territory with humans, one elephant was killed. The herd then gathered, circling the fallen body, and remained there for a long time. The narrator’s soft voice said, "Mammals possess innate emotional genes, and elephants understand the meaning of loss and know how to mourn." As I sculpted this little elephant wearing a ballet tutu, I was reminded of a young calf from that documentary. It gently nudged the trunk of its deceased mother lying on the ground. I was deeply struck by the profound sadness in that young elephant’s eyes—a look much like a child who has just finished ballet class and is sitting outside the studio, waiting patiently for its mother to come home. I created this little elephant with the heartfelt wish that all other young elephants in the world will always have their mothers waiting for them.
