The new book contains 105 black-and-white images of Ye Cai's works and 3 introductions and articles. The whole book is organized for visual fluency and readers' browsing experience. It mainly focuses on photography works, and is paired with Hakka descriptions and English translations to present Ye Cai's lifelong investment in documentary photography of "local culture."
Ye Cai, who was born and raised in Erlin, Changhua, has been curious about the ability to take portraits with black boxes since he was a child. He left home when he was 16 to 17 years old to start exploring images and study diligently. He never understood the optical principles of film and took photos. It was difficult for Zhang Fu to recognize the prize he won in the competition, so he became a professional in his darkroom skills. He has been shooting with a camera on his shoulder since the 1970s. He has traveled all over Taiwan and paid attention to the changes in the landscape of Hakka Village, farmland and river landscapes, and old industries through the lens. , folk celebrations, common people and other themes, these works embody the photographer's life history and contemporary Taiwanese society, as well as the deep and close connection with the land and Hakka.
When I was young, I traveled from Kaohsiung, Tainan to the east. I happened to meet Zheng Sangxi on the way through Keelung, who was taking photos with fellow photographers. After chatting with me, I became a teacher-student opportunity to improve my photography. Later, in 1974, I was shortlisted for the Eastman Photography Competition in the United States. The following year, he became a special photographer. After traveling to more than 60 countries in 8 years, Mr. Ye saw the buffalo artwork that symbolized the spirit of Taiwan on display in France. He was shocked by the beauty of his hometown culture and resolutely quit his high salary and returned to China to devote himself to local documentary photography. After Ye Cao returned to Taiwan in the 73rd year of the Republic of China (1984 AD), he moved to Hakka Village in northern Taiwan. Under difficult economic conditions, he independently carried out local documentary photography and consistently photographed local places for a long time. He watched the scene of Taiwan with a calm and warm eye. The images of landscapes, humanities, and life have preserved the precious cultural landscape of Taiwan since the 1970s. Nostalgia and a sense of tranquility that overflows beyond the lens have truly pervaded Ye Cao’s 60 years of photography.
