We are often asked, "How is freehand embroidery different from machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is done by a machine that reads an embroidery design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs every time. On the other hand, "freehand embroidery" is an artisan skill where the craftsperson moves the fabric to create the embroidery design. Because it is made by a person, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand embroidery. Since 2000, the number of people who can perform freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are reportedly no young people who can do it nowadays.
