Westerwald salt-glazed handpainted stoneware jug

Westerwald salt-glazed handpainted stoneware jug made in West Germany second half of the last century. This type of stoneware is also known as Kannenbäckerland Stoneware, and it is a distinctive type of salt glazed grey pottery from the Höhr-Grenzhausen and Ransbach-Baumbach area of Westerwaldkreis in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. The layer of salt glaze ensures that the pottery is water tight without adding any flavour to the liquid contained in the jug. Westerwald stoneware is typically decorated with cobalt blue painted designs. It has a very small chip off the rim as well as a few small one along the neck and one on the foot.
