This brooch is crafted from sterling silver and originates from the Art Nouveau period in Britain, around the 1900s.
It features an annular brooch structure, characterized by a circular frame with a sliding pin passing through the front. This type of brooch was a significant cultural artifact and symbol within Celtic culture, coexisting with the penannular brooch.
The circle, in Celtic tradition, represents natural cycles such as the sun, moon, and the changing seasons, imbuing the annular brooch with symbolic meaning of cosmic order. Furthermore, the completeness of the circle and the "inseparability" conveyed by its closed form symbolize perfection and union. In rituals emphasizing eternity and connection, like weddings or alliances, annular brooches were exchanged as gifts, directly embodying the cultural symbolism of union, commitment, and protection.
The piece is adorned with a complete band of interlace patterns. These flowing lines intertwine and extend, creating an unbroken woven structure that signifies the profound connection between the individual and the community, the natural and the supernatural. It also symbolizes the continuity of life and is often considered a protective amulet. While interlace patterns typically feature geometric designs formed by symmetrical lines, this brooch merges them with the Art Nouveau style, resulting in more fluid and graceful lines.
To wear this annular brooch, the pin is flipped outwards. The fabric is passed through the central opening of the ring, and then the pin secures the fabric within the inner diameter of the ring.
The back of the piece bears several hallmarks: the maker's mark 'A.R.', three assay marks indicating it was tested and met the 925 silver standard in Birmingham in 1900, and 'IONA'. The 'IONA' mark may relate to the Isle of Iona in Scotland, an area renowned for its silverware and traditional designs.
The brooch is in good antique condition, showing normal signs of oxidation and wear commensurate with its age. Some hallmarks are slightly worn. Please note this is a century-old antique piece, not a new item.
