This is then allowed to settle again (the Shuifei purification method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried, then pressed using ancient techniques. Uneven fine mineral flash particles can still be seen on the cross-section. **「Imperial Sand」** **A brighter, true red with higher hardness.** The production method involves multiple stages of purification from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/Shuifei/high polishing**, followed by ancient pressing techniques. Imperial Sand has almost no visible mineral flash on the surface, but it is present internally. Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, Dan Sha was called Zhu Sha. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals. The color of cinnabar is enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also an indispensable component of "八宝印泥" (bābǎo yìnní, eight-treasure ink paste).
