The Navy Double-Breasted Wool Coat (Pea Coat), also known as the 740 coat, first emerged in the early 18th century, designed for use by the Dutch Navy. To withstand the harsh maritime climate and severe conditions, the Pea Coat was crafted with meticulous attention to materials, using Melton wool. The double-breasted design enhances warmth, while the wide collar can be turned up to protect the neck from wind. It also features two hand-warming pockets on each side. The Pea Coat gradually spread from Europe to America. By the early 20th century, the U.S. military made some improvements to the Pea Coat's fabric and silhouette. They adopted a softer wool fabric, shortened the coat to hip length, and simplified the side pockets to two. This revised version was named the 740 coat. To this day, the U.S. Navy continues to use this updated Pea Coat as one of its standard uniforms. Through centuries of evolution, the exterior design of the Pea Coat has remained largely unchanged, a testament to its enduring classic status.
