About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln firing method that reaches temperatures above 1200 degrees Celsius using firewood. The resulting "fire marks" naturally left by the direct flame on the ceramic body, along with the ash naturally settled from the burning wood, imbue the pieces with a warm, rich color and diverse variations – a realm unattainable by electric or gas kilns. Compared to typical electric and gas kilns, the entire wood firing process—from kiln packing, ignition, sealing, to cooling—takes approximately 8 to 10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors such as humidity, wood dryness, the speed of wood feeding, and kiln loading position, can significantly impact the success of the piece, leading to a higher breakage rate. Experienced wood-firing artisans meticulously consider kiln airflow dynamics during packing, planning the placement of pieces based on their size, estimating flame paths, and strategizing the feeding of wood and charcoal to achieve the perfect firing.
