During the late Edo period, under the Sumptuary Law restricting the use of cotton for commoners, the use of cotton fabric was prohibited. However, clothing made from hemp could not withstand the long, snowy, and damp climate of Japan's Tohoku region. Thus, farmers threaded lines through the gaps in the hemp fabric to improve insulation and strengthen the cloth, leading to the development of "Kogin embroidery." This embroidery method requires counting the warp threads of the fabric (simply understood as counting squares) and applying satin stitch row by row. If even a single stitch is misplaced, the entire piece must be undone and redone. Therefore, every stitch in Kogin embroidery is a testament to keen eyesight and patience, a craft defined by its subtlety and persistence.
