Fired under a reduced atmosphere, the Shino glaze displays the most natural flow of color. The white glaze surface is covered in fine crackles, as delicate and gentle as frost in winter; while the base of the cup, where fire marks, iron powder, and ash interweave, forms caramel-colored textures resembling mountain fault lines. Shino glaze is not achieved on the first try. Each instance of glaze crawling, each layer of glaze depth, is the result of the designer's multiple trials, repeated firings, to achieve this near-perfect, natural, and inimitable appearance. All dimensions are measured by hand and may have slight variations. 3. To reduce the chance of deformation, all wood-fired pieces are first bisque-fired and then wood-fired.
