Celluloid (nitrocellulose) is considered the first thermoplastic that can be molded when hot and harden when cooled. It is made of nitric acid, cellulose and camphor. It burns easily and decomposes quickly. It is an ivory substitute invented by American John W. Hyatt in 1868. Ivory celluloid is sometimes referred to as "French ivory" or "artificial ivory" with two brand names.
The first example of celluloid jewelry was made in 1875 by the Celluloid Novelty Company of Newark, New York. They include traditional Victorian Leit patterns, which are very realistic, such as: reliefs, black celluloid mourning jewelry, realistic imitation of animals and holding fans or roses.
Many celluloid accessories come from Japan, and then become the market leader in its production. Japanese celluloid slightly Wax appearance, complicated details, including chrysanthemums, roses, daisies and the like peony flower pattern replication.
Each bracelet is made from molded plastic strips and then finished by hand to achieve a carved ivory or coral look. Then some of these parts are finely painted by hand or glazed with a pearlescent coating.
When you see a celluloid bracelet, you can tell its age by looking for a connection. In the early 1930s examples, the connection was always vertical, and it was often a bit messy when the plastic strips were connected end-to-end. In the late 1950 example, the connection was horizontal and the molding was not very detailed.
These exquisite bracelets produced in Japan in the 1930s are usually labeled as Japan or foreign. They are exported to the United States in large quantities. Later works of art labeled "Occupied Japan" were made for the export market from 1945 to 1952. The sale of these items helped Japan recover its economy after World War II.
Clean celluloid:
You can use an old soft toothbrush to dry or use a small amount of warm water to clean cute celluloid jewelry. After cleaning, be sure to gently dry the jewelry and store it away from direct sunlight. Hand-painted celluloid items should be extra careful. It is important to remember that celluloid is affected by heat and solvents, so do not immerse it in hot water or spray it with perfume, otherwise it will cause discoloration.
