"Sheng (生)" - male role
Refers to the male characters in the play. They can be divided into civilian scholars (Wen Sheng) and martial heroes (Wu Sheng) based on their personalities, and further detailed by age into young men (Xiao Sheng), elder men (Lao Sheng), and children (Nuan Zai Sheng or Tong Sheng).

"Dan (旦)" - female role
Refers to the female characters. Based on their attributes, they are classified into principal characters (Zheng Dan), vivacious characters (Hua Dan), and martial characters (Wu Dan). By age, young female characters (Xiao Dan) are depicted as beautiful and youthful, while elder female characters (Lao Dan) represent middle-aged or elderly women.

"Jing (淨)" - painted face
Also known as "Hua Mian" or "Da Hua Lian" (big painted face). The Jing character's facial makeup is an exquisite art form. They appear mighty and heroic, often clad in armor, exuding a majestic presence, making them the most visually striking puppets in glove puppetry. Based on personality, they can be classified as the upright and loyal red-faced characters (like Guan Yu), the fierce and ill-tempered black-faced characters (like Zhang Fei), and the villainous green-faced characters (like Gai Suwen). Jing characters typically portray generals.

"Mo (末)" - old male
Refers to elderly male characters, commonly called "Gong Mo" in glove puppetry. The distinction between Mo and Lao Sheng lies in the Mo character having a white beard and white hair, signifying an elder. Lao Sheng characters often have black or gray beards. Lao Sheng characters usually have refined appearances, while Gong Mo characters move with a slower, more deliberate gait. Characters like the Earth God, Huang Gai, old monks, and eccentric elders fall under the Mo category.

"Chou (丑)" - clown
In traditional Taiwanese opera, they are commonly known as "San Hua" (three flowers) and serve as the comic relief, dedicated to creating laughter. Based on gender, they can be male clowns (Nan Chou), colloquially called "San Hua Xiao," or female clowns (Nü Chou), known as "Hua Po." Based on personality, they are divided into civilian clowns (Wen Chou) and martial clowns (Wu Chou). The primary function of a Chou character is to amuse, hence their exaggerated and humorous appearance, accompanied by boisterous puppeteering movements.

"Guai (怪)" - others
This category encompasses "other" characters in glove puppetry that do not fit into the predefined classifications. These include demons, ghosts, deities, spirits, characters like the Ox-Head and Horse-Face guards, Seventh Master and Eighth Master, Zhu Bajie, and the Dragon King. Any character that cannot be categorized is placed under "Miscellaneous."
