About Wood Firing 'Wood firing' is a traditional kiln firing method where the kiln reaches temperatures exceeding 1200 degrees Celsius using firewood. The natural 'fire marks' left by the direct contact with the flames on the ceramic body, and the ash naturally settling from the burning wood, imbue the pieces with a warm, rich, and varied coloration that cannot be achieved with electric or gas kilns. Compared to ordinary electric and gas kilns, the entire process of wood firing—from stacking the kiln, igniting the fire, sealing the kiln, to cooling it down—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, combined with factors such as humidity, the dryness of the wood, the speed of stoking the fire, and the placement within the kiln, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher rate of breakage. Experienced wood-firing artisans carefully consider airflow dynamics when stacking the kiln, planning the placement of pieces of varying sizes, estimating the path of the flames, managing the stoking of wood and charcoal, and controlling the intensity of the fire.
