Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch post-Impressionist painter, was a pioneer of Expressionism and had a profound influence on 20th century art, especially Fauvism and German Expressionism. One of Van Gogh's most famous paintings, "The Starry Night" depicts the view from the window of the Saint-Paul Asylum in the French countryside. In a letter to his brother, he wrote: "Long before sunrise, there was nothing but a morning star that looked large."
