Utagawa Hiroshige's (1797-1858) "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" beautifully captures the scenic landscapes and famous sites of Edo throughout the seasons, considered a pinnacle of landscape printmaking. The varied perspectives and extreme choices in foreground and background offer a novel visual experience, while the skillful use of diverse woodblock printing techniques creates effects of light, shadow, and even texture, bringing the scenes to life with remarkable ingenuity.
| Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858)
Poet of Ukiyo-e Landscapes, Creator of The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō
Utagawa Hiroshige was a leading master of Ukiyo-e landscape prints during the late Edo period in Japan. His works are renowned for their fresh, natural depictions and rich emotional depth, infusing the Ukiyo-e style with poetic tranquility and meticulous observation.
His most celebrated series, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō," portrays the scenery and life along the route from Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto, standing as a classic representation of travel and cultural depictions. Furthermore, "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" showcases the ever-changing urban landscapes, emphasizing shifts in light and the passing of seasons, and became a source of inspiration and admiration for Impressionist painters like Van Gogh.
Hiroshige's style blends rational composition with emotive color palettes, expertly utilizing the contrast between negative space and bold colors to create a unique visual rhythm. He excelled at capturing poetic moments within everyday scenes, transforming landscapes from mere visual records into expressions of flowing emotion.
Though Utagawa Hiroshige passed away in 1858, his artistic style profoundly influenced the European art world in the late 19th century, opening doors for Ukiyo-e to reach a global audience and establishing him as a significant figure in Japanese art history.
