The secluded mountain paths and tranquil contemplation depicted in his work reflect the Song literati's pursuit of transcendent mental states, where self and object become one. Vernacular Translation: Bird paths wind through the clouds in the mountains, silent and serene; the Zen mind, seated and observing its reflection, finds freedom and ease in the natural world. Design Interpretation: This piece centers visually on a wabi-sabi style cement torii gate, symbolizing the starting point of an inner journey towards tranquility. The torii stands tall on a bed of white sand in a secluded valley, flanked by mossy hills, with black stones subtly accenting the scene like shadows. The layered green plantings resemble the forests of the mountains, creating an ethereal, picturesque realm as light and shadow interplay.
