The term "university tee" originated in the 1920s in America. At that time, to provide athletes with warm and comfortable sportswear for winter activities, the old-fashioned American one-piece garment was modified into a loose fit with ribbed cuffs and hem for ease of movement. The cotton material also allowed athletes to absorb sweat during training. Later, when the US Olympic team appeared in uniform wearing university tees, they became widely popular on campuses. American high schools rarely had uniforms, and American universities often printed sweatshirts with their emblems or names. Because they were comfortable, easy to style, and very warm, they were highly favored by everyone.
