There are three main large iron masses of Aletai. One is called “Armanty”, first discovered in Xinjiang in 1898 and now stored in Xinjiang Geology and Mineral Resources Museum. Another is in a private collector’s hands. The other is “Tear of Allah”, found by a local farmer in a valley in a mountainous area of Aletai County and named according to netizens’ suggestions. We use other smaller but still rather huge pieces found near the “Tear of Allah” area.
Although not that noted to the world, the well-developed Widmanstätten patterns prove its 4.3 billion years of history and present its characteristic beauty.
<Why I have never heard of Aletai?>
Xinjiang is an extremely vast area in China. Besides Aletai found there, there are also many other kinds of meteorites such as Fukang Pallasite and Huoyanshan Iron Meteorite. However, like the rest parts of the world, most of the meteorites are stone meteorites, so the ones worth being processed into jewelries are very rare.
According to the policy in China, huge masses of Aletai are not allowed to export as they are important national geology resources. Due to this, only Chinese collectors have the chances to have a huge mass in hands, which makes Aletai not so available compared to Muonionalusta on the market.
