It flourished during the Mesozoic era and became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period. It is a crucial index fossil for geological dating. Its appearance is very similar to the nautilus, and it is the ancestor of the octopus subclass (of which the octopus is a representative species). Its shell is composed of layers of aragonite. Thick aragonite layers produce red or green iridescence; thin aragonite layers create blue or purple hues.
