Thousand Rabbit Ear, *Kalanchoe miltii*, belongs to the Kalanchoe genus in the Crassulaceae family. It has short, fuzzy, grayish-green leaves and the most unique leaf shape among all rabbit ear varieties—broad and short, with slightly serrated edges. Interestingly, it grows more vigorously in the summer. If it lacks light, its leaves will appear limp and turn yellowish. Because its leaves often appear whitish, some people mistakenly call it the White Rabbit Ear. However, the White Rabbit Ear has more slender leaves that truly resemble rabbit ears, so this is not it – please do not confuse them.
The Thousand Rabbit Ear's leaves are covered in a layer of soft fuzz, giving them a pleasing texture. The charm of the Thousand Rabbit Ear, besides its fuzzy leaves, is its perfectly symmetrical opposite leaves with serrated edges, reminiscent of tiny, adorable white maple leaves. The overall impression is one of soft, fuzzy cuteness. The stems tend to become woody and can be shaped by withholding water.
Environment
Rabbit Ear succulents thrive in cool environments and require dry, sunny conditions. While they can tolerate partial shade, they are susceptible to waterlogging and cannot withstand heat and humidity. Prolonged exposure to dim conditions will cause the stems and leaves to thin and grow upwards (known as etiolation), weakening the plant. The fuzz on the leaves will lose its luster, significantly impacting its visual appeal. Like most succulents, Rabbit Ears grow during cooler seasons and enter dormancy in high summer temperatures. The period from September to June each year is their growing season.
Soil
The requirements for the growing medium are not overly strict. Generally, a well-draining planting medium is sufficient.
Watering
This is a relatively drought-tolerant plant. Water when the surface soil is dry, watering thoroughly until water drains from the bottom. Water approximately once a week, or about 3 times a month.
When watering, avoid getting the fuzzy leaves wet, as this can easily lead to rot. If you need to clean the leaves, gently brush off dirt with a soft brush.
Light
Requires partial to full sun, with at least 3.5 hours of sunlight daily. Provide ample sunlight when temperatures are low. Sufficient sunlight keeps the plant compact and sturdy, with tightly packed leaves that stand upright. Conversely, insufficient light causes the plant to etiolate, stretching the gaps between leaves and resulting in a loose overall appearance. At the same time, the stem becomes weak, and the leaf color fades.
Propagation
Propagation methods are similar to most succulents, including stem cuttings and leaf propagation. Spring and autumn are suitable seasons for propagation.
Stem Cuttings:
Allow the cut tops to dry, then plant them in dry soil. Once roots have formed, begin watering sparingly. The mother plant after cutting will produce more branches, and the newly grown leaves at the top will not yet exhibit serrations.
Leaf Propagation:
Highly recommended! Give it one Thousand Rabbit Ear leaf, and you can grow many baby Rabbit Ears. Select a healthy leaf, gently wiggle it left and right, and carefully remove it. Place it in a well-ventilated area with indirect light for one to two days to dry. Then, place it on the surface of moist soil. Do not water immediately. Maintain a cool, ventilated environment for over 20 days, and it will typically develop roots and sprouts. Avoid frequent watering, as this can cause stem rot.
📝 Key Points: Loves sunlight, well-draining soil, dislikes waterlogging, water thoroughly when dry, water once a week.
