Reading Literature with a Brush: Exploring Inscriptions and Rubbings, Part Nine --- Spirits within Inscription and Rubbing Artifacts / A Sharing by Professor Shi Xiao-yun & Ms. Liang Hui-sheng ---Instructor / Professor Shi Xiao-yun There are numerous famous inscriptions and rubbings throughout history! In terms of breadth, it is already remarkable to master one or two with dedicated practice. However, in terms of depth, the background stories and historical lineages of beloved inscriptions and rubbings are rich with tales. Knowing these can further enhance the appreciation. This session will explore the history, transmission, and subsequent interpretations and re-creations of several renowned inscriptions and rubbings. This includes precious bronze bells and ding vessels unearthed from the pre-Qin period, revealing their ancient aura; letters between dignitaries and literati, showcasing their camaraderie and conflicts; and the collecting history of famous inscriptions and rubbings, illustrating their tumultuous journeys through time... Accompanying the physical artifacts, we invite Ms. Liang Hui-sheng, a seasoned docent from the National Palace Museum, to share the stories behind these cultural relics. The Palace Museum's Centennial Celebration: A Pilgrimage to Masterpieces of Calligraphy and Painting The National Palace Museum celebrates its centennial with three unprecedented special exhibitions, featuring masterpieces of calligraphy and painting spanning the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Many of these works are rarely seen, appearing after many years. Exhibits at the National Palace Museum, Taipei: Huang Gongwang's "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" (Zhongfeng edition) from the Yuan Dynasty; Calligraphic classics from the "Four Masters of Song" including Su Shi's "Chills and Snow Poem," "Prelude to the Red Cliff," and "On the River"; Mi Fu's "Shu Letter"; and Huang Tingjian's "Pavilion of Pine Wind." Also on display are avian and floral paintings by Huang Jucai, a master of Northern Song bird-and-flower painting, such as "Partridges and Sparrows," "Untitled Figures by Song Masters," and "Emperor Huizong's Gathering of Scholars." Exhibits at the National Palace Museum, Southern Branch: Three monumental landscape paintings from the Northern Song Dynasty (Fan Kuan, Guo Xi, Li Tang); Yan Zhenqing's "Memorial to My Nephew," considered the second-greatest cursive script in China. Japanese Loan Exhibits: Li Gonglin's "Five Horses" from the Northern Song Dynasty and "Landscape Scroll of Xiaoxiang" by Li Shicheng of the Southern Song Dynasty.
