Before stitching, specialized diamond chisels are used to create precise holes in the leather, ensuring the distinctive, undulating stitch pattern that sets our work apart from machine-made items. While this process significantly extends production time, it is a crucial step in imbuing each leather piece with the artisan's touch and a warm, tactile quality. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges Before completion, the edges of the leather are carefully burnished and sealed. This meticulous process results in smooth, rounded, and naturally finished edges. "Cutting Line" employs a unique edge-finishing technique. We begin by repeatedly sanding the edges with sandpaper until smooth, then apply a layer of edge sealant for a refined appearance. This is repeated 2-3 times, followed by a coat of edge wax. Finally, a burnishing tool is used to repeatedly polish the edges until they achieve a lustrous finish. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For our hand-dyed items, "Cutting Line" utilizes Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes imported from the United States. To achieve a uniform and natural coloration, the leather is first dampened with water. The dye is then applied layer by layer with a sponge, gradually deepening the hue until the desired color is reached. Once dry, a color-fixative is applied to enhance colorfastness. A light application of water is then used to wipe the surface, removing any dust and further evening out the color. As each piece is dyed by hand, subtle variations in color will exist between individual items, making each bag uniquely its own.
