From a farmer's son to an internationally acclaimed calligrapher, Tu Chung-Kao forged his unique path in calligraphy with unwavering determination and focus. He believes that even with humble beginnings, a passion for words can carve out one's value between the brush and the ink. Early in his career, Tu studied Northern steles under Wang Kai-Ho, later becoming a disciple of Wang Chuang-Wei, and one of the "Seven Sons of Wang." His foundation in calligraphy is deep. He also studied landscape painting with Fu Chien-Fu; though he later focused on calligraphy, the training in composition and spatial awareness is deeply embedded in his work. Subsequently, he sought guidance from renowned calligraphers such as Wang Pei-Yueh and Hsieh Tsung-An, and further honed his skills under the tutelage of seal script master Hsi Nan-Hsun, recommended by Wang Pei-Yueh, gradually refining his technique and comprehending the subtle intricacies of the Way of Calligraphy. In 1977, Tu Chung-Kao met Master Nan Huai-Chin and delved into Buddhist studies and Zen meditation. From then on, his creative vision expanded beyond mere technical refinement to embodying life philosophy. He transformed "calligraphy" into a form of spiritual practice, observing the self and reflecting the universe within each stroke. His characters are not just words, but the flow of the mind, the pulse of the spirit. Tu Chung-Kao is not just a calligrapher; he is a "happy-go-lucky" practitioner who embodies life philosophy through his writing.
